What testing can explore.
Preimplantation genetic testing examines genetic material from an embryo before a possible transfer. Different tests address different questions, such as chromosome-number changes or a particular inherited condition.
Your physician and genetics team should explain whether testing is appropriate, which test is being discussed, and how the result could change your care. It is not a universal requirement for IVF.
What a result cannot promise.
Testing has limits. A result does not guarantee implantation, a healthy pregnancy or a live birth, and does not rule out every genetic or medical condition. Some results may be inconclusive or need specialist interpretation.
Informed consent includes discussion of embryo biopsy, possible results, uncertainty and alternatives.
The effect on your journey.
Biopsy, testing and results can change the timing of transfer. Your team may plan embryo freezing and a later transfer instead of completing everything in one visit. Ask how laboratory fees, testing fees and any return trip are reflected in your treatment budget.
