Dr. Nilo Frantz. Founder and IVF pioneer.
Dr. Nilo Frantz is a pioneer of Brazilian reproductive medicine. During his training in London in the 1980s, he observed the work of Robert Edwards, the IVF pioneer whose collaboration led to the first birth through in vitro fertilization.
He founded Clinoson, a pioneering ultrasound-imaging center in southern Brazil, and established the human reproduction service at Hospital Moinhos de Vento in 1992. These contributions span diagnostic imaging, fetal medicine and assisted reproduction.
He was responsible for the first baby born through in vitro maturation (IVM) in Latin America. His clinical work, teaching and role in developing reproductive services have made him an influential figure in Brazil’s fertility community.
A graduate of UFRGS, he holds specialist credentials in gynecology and obstetrics from the Brazilian Medical Association and is a member of ESHRE, ASRM and SBRA.
Marcos Iuri Roos Kulmann, PhD. Scientific director.
An embryologist and researcher, Marcos Kulmann holds a doctorate in Cell and Developmental Biology from Charles University and the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, and completed fellowship training at Columbia University in New York.
After five years abroad, he returned to Brazil to lead the group’s scientific direction in 2025. His work connects clinical embryology with translational research, technology development and collaborations with academic institutions and emerging biotechnology companies.
He leads the group’s Research and Innovation activities, including scientific studies, professional education and contributions to Brazilian and international reproductive-medicine meetings.
Pioneering in vitro maturation in Latin America.
Dr. Nilo Frantz and his team were responsible for the first Latin American baby born through in vitro maturation (IVM). In this technique, immature oocytes are collected and matured in the laboratory before fertilization.
IVM is a specialist pathway with different indications and laboratory requirements from conventional stimulated IVF. Its role is assessed individually; the milestone is evidence of technical experience, not a reason to recommend IVM to every patient.

Cell-free DNA and embryo chromosome assessment
Nilo Frantz is a co-author of a multicenter study involving 2,539 blastocysts. The study examines whether DNA released into culture medium can reflect an embryo’s chromosome constitution. This is research into a possible testing approach, not a claim that noninvasive testing replaces established biopsy-based care.

The Nilo Frantz international symposium has brought specialists together in Porto Alegre to discuss endometriosis, infertility and reproductive medicine. The 2015 program lists Dr. Frantz as general coordinator and opening speaker, with invited professors Charles Chapron and Maurício Simões Abrão.
The 2017 symposium included a lecture by Professor Carlos Simón, documented in Igenomix’s event coverage.

ENNE Lab lists Carla Giovana Basso, PhD, among its embryologists. Her training includes biomedicine and a master’s degree at UFRGS and a doctorate in physiology at UFPR.
